This story takes place in Paris, during the Nazi occupation
of World War II. The Muslim community had some sort of strong connection with Jews,
so they helped to protect them during this period of time, risking their lives
trying to save them from being harmed. The mosque was built upon a labyrinth of
subterranean tunnels or rooms and had enough space to keep people hidden. Other
characteristic of this particular place was that it included an escape route
that could be used for those hunted by the French police and would get them out
right next to the banks of the river seine.
Why on earth would someone put their life on the line for
people that were wanted dead by a powerful person? It was just their way of
being, imposed on their culture and at the same time of their own choosing. To
do what they thought was the right thing, help the ones in need without
expecting anything in return. That’s how strong the connection between Jews and
Muslims was. They gave everything they could and discovered in the most
brilliant and creative way how to get them out of sight so they wouldn’t be threatened
anymore.
